Common HVAC Scams And How To Avoid Them
You need to maintain your HVAC systems. While most contractors are completely above board and competent, there are some that will try to scam you. So, it’s important to recognize a scam so you can protect yourself.
Selling Oversized HVAC Systems
Contrary to popular belief, bigger isn’t always better. This is especially true when buying HVAC systems. Buying a bigger HVAC system than your home needs can result in short-cycling, which means it would be turning off and on too often, which can lead to higher energy bills. Scammers use the “bigger is better” tactic to sell bigger units, which gives them a reason to inflate installation costs. A legitimate HVAC contractor will provide a load calculation, which details your home’s calculated heating and cooling requirements, and the recommended HVAC systems that match those needs.
Free Tune-Ups
Tune-ups are part of scheduled HVAC repair and maintenance jobs, and aren’t usually offered as a separate service. Be wary of unsolicited offers for “free” tune-ups. Scammers use this tactic to gain access to your HVAC system. Under the guise of performing inspections, they might deliberately cause damage or remove some parts. In addition to ridiculously expensive “repair” costs, your warranty coverage may also be voided.
Pressure Tactics
If there was a scammer’s handbook, this is probably one of the oldest tricks in it. Scammers would offer some kind of “secret” discount or promotion that will expire within one or two days. Some will offer a “best price”, but you have to sign up immediately. Legitimate contractors will stand by the the price indicated on the quotation and will give you ample time to review the contract before you sign up.
Asking For Full Payment Upfront
Most contractors will never ask for 100% of the payment before the work begins. A typical payment plan starts with a down payment upon signing the contract, one or two installments upon milestones, such as delivery of the HVAC unit, and a final installment after successful installation.
