3 Tips On Minimizing Risk Of Damage From Wildfires

Even if your area was a safe distance from the recent wildfires, stray embers and other risks could have damaged your roof in some way. Read on as HVAC contractors at Green Air Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. share some tips on how to minimize the risk of wildfire damage to your home.

TIP: Clear The Area Around The House

Maintain a defensible space around the house of up to 5 feet from the outer perimeter. This area should be filled with noncombustible materials like gravel, brick, or concrete. If possible, allow up to 6 inches of clearance made of noncombustible material from the ground to the bottom row of the siding.

Measure another 25 feet beyond the 5-foot clearance, then remove shrubs, trim the trees and remove dead vegetation. Clear the area around the house of combustible material, such as paper debris, stored fuel, and scrap wood. Do the same vertically by removing leaves and debris from the roof and gutters.

TIP: Keep The Home Ventilation Clear And Protected

In the event that wind blows embers and ash in your home’s direction, make sure the eaves and vents are protected with mesh made of aluminum or some other non-combustible material. Have HVAC repair and maintenance performed by a professional to ensure you have efficient air circulation inside.

TIP: Invest In A Fire-Resistant Exterior

If available, invest in exterior components with known fire ratings or those made of fire-resistant material. Here are some examples:

  • Deck: Untreated wood is vulnerable to fire damage. Consider metal or fiber cement decking for your next deck replacement. Make sure the patio covers, as well as the patio furniture, are made of fire-retardant material.
  • Siding: Fiber cement siding is your best bet for protection against fire damage. There are fiber cement siding options that can match the look of your existing siding. If you currently have wood shake siding, you shouldn’t worry about having to completely change your home’s looks.
  • Roof: Metal, tile, and slate are roofing options with the best fire rating. If you must have asphalt shingles, check and make sure they’re tested for fire resistance. GAF offers products designed with Advanced Protection® Shingle Technology, as well as components like the VersaShield® underlayment.

Customer Testimonials

Our clients love the energy solutions we provide!

Nick is very well educated on the products industry. He has been in the industry for years now and knows more than anyone else I have spoken to. Its very refreshing to have the owner of the company come out to talk to you about your options compared to a door to door sales guy who cant even answer the most basic questions. Im very happy with the service and attention to detail.

These guys actually know what they are doing and do what they say they are going to do. They are capable in many areas including installing solar panels, Tesla batteries and also HVAC. They complete the whole job with their own employees rather than using outside contractors. We were really pleased with the results on three separate jobs. Thanks.

Nick and Green Air installed our Solar One year ago, it has exceeded its projected output and works great! The work was started and completed on time and Green Air completed all the extra work such as getting permits from the city of Benicia. Green Air employees cleaned up their work site daily and they were a pleasure to work with. I love the fact that we have shrunk our carbon footprint.

Our solar was installed on our house earlier this year. I found Nick and Green Air to be extremely professional, responsive to questions and started and completed the job on time. Nick has a very strong work ethic and was competitive in his pricing as compared to other companies. It’s also nice to know that PG & E is now my customer!
